Why Dog Dental Health Matters

Without regular maintenance, by the time you notice your dog's teeth are wobbly or covered in calculus, the teeth may already be severely decayed, and extractions are then needed to prevent further infection and oral pain. This build-up of plaque and tartar drives periodontal (gum) disease, the most common dental condition in dogs, which progresses from mild gingivitis to advanced gum, bone and tooth loss. The bacteria involved can also affect the heart, liver and kidneys, so regular dental checks, scaling and polishing protect more than just the mouth. A professional dog dental cleaning removes plaque and tartar that brushing alone cannot reach, especially below the gumline.

Stops Pain Early

Dogs hide dental pain well. Regular scaling and assessment catch problems before they become extractions.

Prevents Tooth Loss

Removing calculus protects the gums and roots, helping your dog keep healthy teeth for longer.

Fresher Breath

Persistent bad breath is usually disease, not normal. A dog teeth cleaning tackles the cause.

Signs Your Dog Needs a Dental Scale & Polish

Book a canine dental scale and polish assessment if you notice any of these:

  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Yellow or brown tartar (calculus) on teeth
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Reluctance to eat hard food or chew toys
  • Drooling or pawing at the mouth
  • Loose, wobbly or broken teeth

Our Dog Dental Procedures

A complete dental examination and cleaning performed under general anaesthesia. A thorough dental scale and polish is the only way to clean below the gumline, where most dental disease lies.

Vet using iM3 ultrasonic scaler for dog dental scaling and polishing

Pre-Dental Consultation

Our vet performs a physical examination and recommends blood tests to assess your dog's health and dental condition, especially important for senior dogs, before confirming suitability for the procedure.

Safe General Anaesthesia

All dental procedures are done under general anaesthesia. Your dog receives IV fluid therapy and comprehensive anaesthetic monitoring throughout to ensure safety and minimise stress.

Ultrasonic Scaling & Polishing

Using our iM3 GS Elite unit specialised for veterinary dentistry, we thoroughly scale away calculus, including from under the gums, then polish the teeth to slow future plaque build-up.

Extractions with Pain Relief

If your dog requires extractions as dental treatment for dogs, we routinely use local anaesthetic dental nerve blocks for intra- and post-operative pain relief.

Comfortable Recovery

Your dog is monitored as it wakes, supporting a speedy and comfortable recovery before heading home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is dog dental cleaning safe under anaesthesia?

Yes. Before the procedure our vets carry out a physical examination and recommend blood tests to confirm your dog is a suitable candidate. During the cleaning your dog receives IV fluid therapy and comprehensive anaesthetic monitoring throughout for safety.

How often should my dog have a dental cleaning?

Most dogs benefit from a professional cleaning every 6–12 months, depending on breed, diet and home care. Our vets recommend a schedule after examining your dog.

How much does dog dental cleaning cost?

A dog dental scale and polish starts from $550 (inclusive of 9% GST), and more severe cases can go up to around $1,000. The procedure charge excludes blood tests (basic package from $250). We provide a personalised quote after a pre-dental consultation.

Can you clean my dog's teeth without anaesthesia?

Most dental disease lies beneath the gumline. Only while your dog is under general anaesthesia can we safely and effectively scale away calculus from under the gums, so all our dental procedures are done under anaesthesia.

Do you take dental X-rays for dogs?

We do not perform dental X-rays (radiographs) in-house. Our dog dental cleaning focuses on a thorough physical examination, ultrasonic scaling and polishing below the gumline under general anaesthesia. If your dog's case requires dental X-rays, we will refer you to a suitable facility.

How can I keep my dog's teeth healthy at home?

Daily tooth brushing with a pet-safe toothpaste is the gold standard. You can also slow plaque with dental chews, dental diets and water additives. Look for products carrying the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal. Home care complements but does not replace professional scaling below the gumline.
