Plaque vs Tartar in Canines: What Owners Need to Watch For

Quick answer: Plaque is the soft, invisible bacterial film that forms on teeth every day, and you can remove it at home by brushing. Tartar (calculus) is what plaque becomes once it hardens, usually within a few days, and it can only be removed by a professional scale and polish. The real damage happens where tartar creeps below the gumline.

“Plaque” and “tartar” get used as if they mean the same thing, but the difference matters a great deal for your dog’s mouth. One you can manage at home; the other you cannot. Understanding how the first turns into the second (and how quickly) is the key to keeping your dog’s teeth healthy and avoiding painful gum disease down the line. Here is what every owner should know.

What is plaque?

Plaque is a soft, sticky, almost colourless film made up of bacteria, saliva and food particles. It starts forming on the tooth surface within hours of eating and builds up continuously, every single day. Because it is soft and pale, it is easy to miss: you often cannot see it at all.

The good news: plaque is removable. Mechanical disruption (brushing, an appropriate chew, or simply a dog gnawing) wipes plaque off before it can do harm. This is precisely why daily tooth-brushing is so effective: it clears the plaque while it is still soft.

What is tartar (calculus)?

If plaque is left in place, minerals in your dog’s saliva harden it into tartar, also called calculus. This is the rough, yellow-brown crust you can see on the teeth, especially the large teeth at the back and along the gumline. The transformation is fast: plaque can begin hardening into tartar within just a few days of being left undisturbed.

Once plaque has hardened into tartar, it is firmly bonded to the tooth. No amount of brushing, chewing or wiping will shift it. Tartar can only be removed with professional dental instruments during a scale and polish.

Why canine tartar buildup matters

Tartar is not just unsightly. Its rough surface gives even more plaque something to cling to, so build-up accelerates once it starts. More importantly, tartar pushes below the gumline, where the bacteria it harbours trigger inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and, over time, destruction of the gum, ligament and bone that hold the tooth in place: this is periodontal disease. It is remarkably common: by around three years of age, most dogs already have some degree of periodontal disease (2019 AAHA Dental Care Guidelines).

The part you can see on the crown of the tooth is only the tip of the problem. The disease that causes pain, infection and tooth loss sits hidden beneath the gum, which is exactly why a visual check at home is never the full picture.

How to spot it at home

Lift your dog’s lip and have a look, ideally once a week. Warning signs include:

  • Yellow-brown crust on the teeth, heaviest on the back teeth and near the gumline.
  • Persistent bad breath: a reliable early flag of bacterial build-up.
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums, or a pink tinge on toys and in the water bowl.
  • Reluctance to chew, dropping food, or pawing at the mouth.

Bad breath and visible brown crust are the two clues owners notice most. If you are seeing the behavioural changes too, it is worth reading the signs of dental pain in dogs, because tartar and pain often go hand in hand.

Prevention vs treatment

The crucial distinction: you can prevent tartar at home, but once it has formed you can only treat it at the clinic.

Prevention (at home):

  • Daily tooth-brushing is the gold standard: it removes plaque before it hardens. Here is how to brush your dog’s teeth.
  • VOHC-accepted dental chews and diets. The Veterinary Oral Health Council seal means a product has trial data showing it reduces plaque or tartar. Avoid very hard chews, bones and antlers, which fracture teeth.
  • Consistency. Because plaque reforms within hours, daily habits beat occasional big efforts.

Treatment (at the vet): Once tartar has hardened, the only way to remove it, above and below the gumline, is a professional dental scale and polish. A polish afterwards smooths the enamel so plaque is slower to re-attach. This is the core of good dog dental care, and it is done under general anaesthesia so the area below the gumline can be cleaned thoroughly and safely.

How we help at AVH Animal Ark

At AVH Animal Ark Veterinary Group we assess your dog’s teeth, advise on the right home-care routine to keep plaque under control, and perform a thorough scale and polish when tartar has taken hold, using our iM3 GS Elite dental unit, under safe general anaesthesia with IV fluids and full monitoring. We are at Springleaf and Tampines, open 7 days a week. A dog dental scale and polish starts from $550 (inclusive of 9% GST), with a personalised quote after examination. Pre-anaesthetic blood tests are an add-on from $250 and are not included in the $550 price.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does plaque turn into tartar on my dog’s teeth?

Fast: plaque can begin mineralising into tartar within just a few days if it is not removed. That is why daily brushing works so much better than occasional cleaning.

Can I remove tartar from my dog’s teeth myself?

No. Once plaque has hardened into tartar it is firmly bonded to the tooth and only professional dental instruments can remove it safely, particularly below the gumline. Scraping at home risks injuring the gums and leaves the hidden disease untouched.

Is brown build-up on my dog’s teeth dangerous?

The visible crust is mostly a warning sign; the danger is the bacteria-laden tartar pushing below the gumline, which drives gum disease, infection and eventual tooth loss. It should be assessed and removed.

Do dental chews remove tartar?

No: at best they slow plaque from forming. They cannot remove tartar that has already hardened. Use VOHC-accepted chews as a helper alongside brushing, not as a replacement for a professional clean.
