Bad Breath in Cats: Root Causes and Quick Veterinary Solutions

Quick answer: Bad breath in cats is not normal: it almost always signals a problem. The most common cause is dental disease (plaque, tartar and gum infection), but persistent or unusual odours can also point to kidney disease, diabetes or other illness. Because the smell often comes from infection below the gumline, the lasting fix is usually a professional dental scale and polish under anaesthesia, after a proper check.

Many owners assume a bit of “cat breath” is just part of owning a cat. It isn’t. A healthy cat’s mouth should not smell offensive, and persistent bad breath (properly called halitosis) is one of the most reliable early warning signs that something needs attention. The good news is that, once you know the causes, it is usually straightforward to investigate and treat. Here is the vet’s-eye view.

The most common cause: dental disease

In the large majority of cases, bad breath in cats comes from the mouth itself. Plaque (a soft film of bacteria) builds up on the teeth and hardens into tartar within a day or two. That tartar creeps below the gumline, where bacteria multiply and cause infection and inflammation. The by-products of those bacteria are what you smell.

This includes:

  • Periodontal (gum) disease, by far the most common culprit. By three years of age most cats have some degree of it (2019 AAHA Dental Care Guidelines).
  • Tooth resorption, a common and painful condition where the tooth breaks down.
  • Gingivitis or stomatitis, where the gums and mouth lining are severely inflamed.
  • A fractured tooth or oral infection.

If dental disease is the source, no amount of breath freshener will fix it: the infection has to be treated.

Other causes to be aware of

Sometimes the smell is not coming from the teeth at all. Certain illnesses produce distinctive breath:

  • Kidney disease can cause a strong ammonia-like or urine-like smell on the breath, as waste products build up in the body.
  • Diabetes can produce a sweet or fruity, acetone-like odour.
  • Liver disease can cause a foul, musty breath.
  • Foreign material lodged in the mouth (for example, a strand of grass or thread caught around a tooth) can cause sudden, localised odour.

These non-dental causes are exactly why bad breath should never be brushed off. A change in your cat’s breath can be the first clue to a wider health problem.

Quick reference: what the smell may mean

What you noticePossible cause
Foul, “rotten” breath with tartar and red gumsDental / gum disease
Ammonia or urine-like smellKidney disease
Sweet, fruity, acetone-like smellDiabetes
Sudden one-sided odour, pawing at mouthForeign material or fractured tooth
Drooling, dropping food, reluctance to eatPainful dental disease or resorption

This table is a guide, not a diagnosis: only an examination (and sometimes blood tests) can confirm the cause.

When to worry

Any persistent bad breath warrants a vet check. Book sooner rather than later if you also notice:

  • Drooling, dropping food, or chewing on one side.
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums.
  • Weight loss, increased drinking or urinating (which can point to kidney disease or diabetes).
  • Lethargy or a sudden change in appetite.

These accompanying signs help us work out whether the problem is dental, systemic, or both. Our guides to periodontal disease in cats and preventing gum disease in cats explain the dental side in more detail.

What a vet does about it

The first step is a thorough examination. Because most bad breath is dental, your vet will assess the mouth closely, but a full picture often needs a proper cat dental service under general anaesthesia, since the worst disease sits below the gumline where it cannot be seen or cleaned on an awake cat. A treatment visit typically involves:

  • A health and dental check, plus a blood test (an add-on from $250, not included in the procedure price) to check kidney and other organ function and confirm fitness for anaesthesia.
  • Safe general anaesthesia with IV fluids and full monitoring.
  • Probing and charting of each tooth to reveal disease below the gumline.
  • A dental scale and polish using our iM3 GS Elite dental unit, removing tartar above and below the gumline, with extractions if any teeth are too damaged to save.

If the cause turns out to be kidney disease, diabetes or another condition, we treat that directly. Either way, fresh breath follows once the underlying problem is dealt with.

Frequently asked questions

Is bad breath in cats normal?

No. A healthy cat’s mouth should not smell offensive. Persistent bad breath is a warning sign and is always worth investigating.

Could bad breath mean something other than teeth?

Yes. While dental disease is the most common cause, a urine-like smell can suggest kidney disease and a sweet, fruity smell can suggest diabetes, so a check is important.

Will brushing fix my cat’s bad breath?

Brushing helps prevent build-up, but if infection has already taken hold below the gumline, only a professional scale and polish will clear it.

How quickly should I see a vet?

Soon, especially if you also notice drooling, weight loss, or increased drinking and urinating, which can signal a more serious problem.
