Is Anaesthesia Safe for Your Senior Cat’s Dental Work?

Quick answer: For most senior cats, yes: anaesthesia is far safer than many owners fear. With pre-anaesthetic bloodwork, IV fluids, full monitoring and gentle Cat Friendly handling, the risk is low and carefully managed. Age is not a disease, and the real danger usually lies in leaving a painful, infected mouth untreated. Skipping needed dental work often does a senior cat more harm than the anaesthetic ever would.

When we recommend dental work for an older cat, the first reaction is almost always the same: “Is it safe to put her under at her age?” It is a caring, sensible question, and the honest answer is reassuring. Modern feline anaesthesia is carefully tailored to the individual cat, and for the vast majority of seniors the benefits of treating dental disease far outweigh the risks. Here is what actually goes into keeping your cat safe.

“Age is not a disease”

This phrase is a cornerstone of modern veterinary medicine, and it matters here. Being older does not, by itself, make anaesthesia dangerous. What matters is your cat’s health: specifically how well the heart, kidneys and liver are working. A fit 14-year-old can be a lower anaesthetic risk than a younger cat with an undiagnosed problem.

That is why we never judge by age alone. We assess each cat as an individual, screen for hidden issues, and tailor the anaesthetic to suit. A healthy senior cat can be anaesthetised safely.

How we make anaesthesia safe

Safety comes from preparation and monitoring, not luck. For a senior cat’s dental, this means:

  • Pre-anaesthetic bloodwork (an add-on from $250, not included in the procedure price) to check kidney, liver and other organ function before we proceed. This is the single most important step for older cats, as it reveals hidden problems and lets us adjust the plan.
  • A tailored anaesthetic protocol chosen for your individual cat’s age and health.
  • IV fluid therapy throughout, which supports blood pressure and protects the kidneys.
  • Full anaesthetic monitoring (heart rate and rhythm, breathing, oxygen levels, blood pressure and temperature) by a dedicated team member.
  • Careful temperature support and a warm, monitored recovery.
  • Gentle ISFM Cat Friendly handling at every step to keep stress low, which itself makes anaesthesia smoother and safer.

As an ISFM Silver Cat Friendly Clinic, low-stress handling is built into everything we do, and a calmer cat is a safer patient.

The bigger risk: leaving dental disease untreated

Here is the part owners often overlook. Declining dental work does not keep a senior cat safe: it leaves them in ongoing pain. A mouth full of periodontal disease or feline tooth resorption is a source of constant discomfort and chronic infection.

Untreated dental disease can:

  • Cause persistent pain that a stoic cat hides, dulling their quality of life.
  • Lead to difficulty eating and weight loss, which is especially serious in an older cat.
  • Maintain a reservoir of bacteria that places extra strain on the body.

For a senior cat, that ongoing burden is often a greater threat to health and comfort than a well-managed anaesthetic. Treating the mouth frequently makes older cats brighter, hungrier and more themselves.

Weighing it up

ConcernThe reality
“She’s too old for anaesthesia”Age is not a disease; health status is what matters
“What if something’s wrong inside?”Pre-anaesthetic bloodwork screens for hidden problems first
“Anaesthesia is risky”IV fluids and full monitoring keep risk low and managed
“It’s safer to leave the teeth”Untreated dental pain and infection usually do more harm
“It’ll be too stressful”Cat Friendly handling keeps stress to a minimum

When extra caution is needed

None of this means anaesthesia is risk-free, and we are upfront about that. If bloodwork reveals significant kidney, heart or other disease, we may recommend further tests, stabilising the condition first, or adjusting the plan. Occasionally we advise that the risk is too high, but that is a decision made with you, based on real information, not on a number on a birth certificate. And it is worth knowing that anaesthesia-free alternatives are not a safe substitute, as our guide on why anaesthesia-free cleaning isn’t enough explains.

How we help at AVH Animal Ark

Frequently asked questions

Is my senior cat too old for anaesthesia?

Age alone does not rule it out. We assess your cat’s actual health with bloodwork and a physical exam, and most healthy seniors can be anaesthetised safely.

What does the bloodwork check for?

Mainly kidney and liver function and other markers that tell us whether the organs can handle anaesthesia and how to tailor the plan. It is the key safety step for older cats.

What if my cat already has kidney disease?

We can often still proceed with extra precautions: IV fluids, careful drug choices and close monitoring. We discuss the specific risks and benefits with you first.

Isn’t it safer to just leave the teeth alone?

Usually not. Untreated dental disease causes ongoing pain, infection and difficulty eating, which is often a greater risk to a senior cat than a carefully managed anaesthetic.
